 🔍 The job

The Head of SEO is a pivotal role in enhancing our online presence and ensuring our content reaches the right audience across both the British Gas and Hive brands. They will be responsible for developing and implementing effective, future proof SEO and GEO strategies, managing the in-house and agency SEO teams, as well as collaborating with wider marketing and Centrica teams to achieve our business goals.

This new role will own the end-to-end SEO roadmap, combining technical excellence, content optimisation, and authority-building to deliver measurable growth and ensure our brands perform at the forefront of evolving search and AI-driven experiences. This is an exciting opportunity to scope, build and strengthen Centrica’s in-house SEO capabilities as a core growth channel in our ambitious 2030 business plans. 

The role sits within the Centrica Marketing team, part of Centrica Home. We focus on building strong, trusted and warm brands that customers choose to join, stay with and advocate for – creating lasting value for customers and sustained growth for Centrica.

We’re looking for a passionate and strategic Head of SEO to lead our search strategy and elevate visibility across Centrica UK’s two major retail brands:

· British Gas: a brand rich in heritage with a bold new platform for future growth and a product offering that spans energy and home services.

· Hive: our pioneering eco-tech brand, that’s empowering customers to take control of their home energy use.

Across both brands, you’ll shape how millions of people discover, engage with, and trust us online.

💼 Your work 

  • Strategic planning: develop and execute comprehensive SEO strategies to improve organic search rankings and drive traffic to the British Gas and Hive websites.  
  • Identifying opportunities: conduct thorough keyword research and analysis to identify opportunities for content optimisation and new content creation.  
  • Technical SEO: oversee and lead on the technical SEO aspects of the websites, including site architecture, crawlability and indexation.  
  • Collaboration with content creators: to ensure SEO best practices are integrated into all content development processes.  
  • Performance reporting: monitor and analyse website performance using SEO tools and analytics platforms, providing regular reports and insights to stakeholders.  
  • Continuous improvement: keeping up to date with the latest SEO trends, algorithm updates, and industry best practices.  
  • Leadership: manage and mentor a team of three SEO specialists, providing guidance, support and professional development opportunities.  
  • Growth alignment: work closely with the marketing, product, and development teams to align SEO efforts with overall business objectives.  

Key skills and experiences

As a brilliant and experienced SEO Lead, you’ll bring a proven track record of driving organic growth and improving search rankings for market-leading organisations, backed by deep technical SEO expertise, proficiency in tools like Adobe Analytics, Google Search Console and SEMrush. You’ll also have strong analytical capabilities, excellent communication and collaboration skills, as well as demonstrated leadership in managing and developing high-performing teams. 

In addition: 

  • Analytical skills: you must be able to analyse website performance data, keyword research, and other SEO metrics to identify opportunities and issues. This involves using tools like Adobe Analytics, Google Search Console and SEMrush.  
  • Judgment and reasoning: the role requires making informed decisions based on data analysis and industry trends. This includes deciding on the best strategies for improving search rankings and driving organic traffic.  
  • Creativity and Innovation: given the dynamic nature of SEO, you’ll be able to think creatively to develop new strategies and solutions that align with the latest SEO trends and algorithm updates. 
  • Collaboration and communication: effective decision-making in this role also involves collaborating with content creators, marketing, product, and development teams to ensure that SEO efforts are aligned with overall business objectives.  
  • Leadership: As the role involves managing a team of three SEO specialists, the SEO Lead must be able to provide guidance, support, and professional development opportunities, which requires strong leadership and decision-making skills.
